This classic South African treat has officially earned a permanent spot in my quick-and-easy baking rotation. These buttery date squares come together with minimal effort, no oven time, and ingredients you probably already have on hand. They’re rich, nostalgic, and always a crowd-pleaser—perfect for afternoon tea, a sweet snack, or a homemade gift.

Ingredients
300g dates, chopped
250g butter
220g sugar
300g Marie biscuits (or graham crackers), crushed
⅔ cup desiccated coconut
2 tsp vanilla essence
Generous pinch of salt
Method
Line a loaf pan with baking paper and set aside.
Place the butter and sugar into a medium to large saucepan.
Melt over low heat, stirring gently, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved.
Add the chopped dates and stir continuously for about 3 minutes, bringing the mixture to a gentle boil.
Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence and a generous pinch of salt.
Add the crushed Marie biscuits and mix until fully combined and evenly coated.
Press the mixture firmly into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing the top.
Sprinkle evenly with desiccated coconut.
Refrigerate for 3–4 hours, or until fully set.
Remove from the pan, cut into squares, and enjoy.
Storage Tips
Store date squares in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. They also freeze beautifully—just thaw slightly before serving.
